The Annerley-Stephens History Group is a community group encouraging broad involvement in the history of our community.

There are a number of ways of engaging with ASHG.

  • We regularly hold public talks and meetings at our facility at the Yeronga Community Centre at 62 Park Road, Yeronga and elsewhere. Please refer to upcoming events and the calendar for more information.
  • Every week we host informal “Drop-in days” at the ASHG history room. Times and dates are shown also in upcoming events and the calendar.
  • As an active local history group there are many opportunities to volunteer with ASHG. Read more about them here.

Do you live in the inner southside of Brisbane and are interested in local history?

Do you enjoy conversations about history with interesting people?

The Annerley-Stephens History Group hosts Drop In Days at our History room situated at the Yeronga Community Centre at 62 Park Road, Yeronga

Currently our Drop In Day is each Wednesday 9.00-12.00 midday and occasional Saturdays. As a visitor you can chat to a volunteer, learn about upcoming events, look at our displays and library, and share your story about the local community.

Volunteering with the Annerley-Stephens History Group

As ASHG is completely volunteer run, there are many ways of getting involved depending on your interests, your availability and the way you like to work.

Bring along your love of history and sense of fun and see what appeals to you.

Some of the volunteering opportunities include:

  • Joining our drop-in day team at the history room – a great way to talk to people about local history
  • Participating in a community history project e.g. collaborating on researching a geographic area, organising a history walk, and gathering oral histories, photos and documents
  • Programming and organising history events such as conferences, talks and workshops. Volunteers are also needed to help set these events up
  • Participating in community events such as festivals and fetes to reach out to new people about history
  • Assisting with publicity, displays, social media and the website
  • Videoing, photographing and sound recording interviews and events
  • Researching local history and staying abreast of new developments in local history research
  • Joining the committee and planning other ways to engage with the community.

Joining a history group is a way of discussing history with like-minded people and to share your own personal history. We all have a story to tell.

It is also a great way of connecting your history to the local area and reliving memories of days past. We provide opportunities to volunteer and will keep you informed of all of our events and special projects.

ASHG is also affiliated with Brisbane Living History and the Royal Historical Society of Queensland, so you get to hear about events and activities from outside our part of Brisbane.

For just $10.00 annually you can be a part of our ASHG family. We are a very pro-active group – there is always lots happening! You can participate as little or as much as you like.

What was Stephens Shire?

What was Stephens Shire?

Before 1925 the greater Brisbane area was a collection of independent local government areas run by town, city and shire councils and divisional boards.

The Shire of Stephens existed from 1903 to 1925. In 1925, all municipalities were amalgamated to become Brisbane City.

The current suburbs of the old Stephens Shire include, Annerley,Holland Park West, Tarragindi, Tennyson, Yeerongpilly, Yeronga, and parts of Moorooka, Greenslopes, and Mt Gravatt – west of Logan Road.

The Annerley-Stephens History Group tells the stories of people who have lived or currently live in this part of Brisbane.

Suburbs have come and gone since Stephens Shire was established.

The South East freeway in the 1970s was a big disruptor to suburbs in Stephens, splitting former suburbs of Ekibin, the Thompson Estate and Wellers Hill.

Awareness of historical names and current names for areas is useful for research. Below is a list by postcode, of areas falling fully or partly within Stephens:
